Wyoming Soccer Edges UNO, 2-1
OMAHA, Neb. (Sept. 8, 2013) - Two first half goals proved to be enough for the University of Wyoming women’s soccer team, as the Cowgirls defeated the Mavericks, 2-1, at the UNO Soccer Field in Omaha on Sunday. Senior forward Olivia Mohtadi found the back of the net in the 11th minute and sophomore forward Jennifer Paul netted the game winner in the 20th minute. UNO (2-4) was able to score on a free kick in the 56th minute, but Wyoming (3-1-1) held on for the victory.
The Cowgirls opened the match as the aggressor, controlling possession for most of the opening 45 minutes. Of the many opportunities in the first half, UW was able to convert twice. In the 11th minute, Paul found Mohtadi who was able to push the ball past the keeper for her first goal of the season. Just under the 20 minute mark, the Cowgirls were able to find the back of the net for the second time. Paul scored her first goal of the season as she was assisted by senior midfielder Liz O’Reilly.
Paul, junior defender Kristin Howard and freshman forward Laurel Ramer led the Cowgirls with two shots each. Mohtadi, junior midfielder Sheree Small, freshman midfielder Mandy Meyer, forward Brooklyn Chambers and defender Shelby Shorb each added one.
Junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm kept the Mavericks scoreless until the 56th minute when UNO’s Hannah Wampler scored on a free kick. Boehm recorded three of her four saves in the second period for the Cowgirls.
Despite the Mavericks taking the advantage in corner kicks for the game seven to four, Wyoming totaled 11 shots, eight on goal, compared to UNO’s seven total shots, five of which were on goal. The Cowgirl defense limited the Mavericks to only one shot attempt in the first stanza. Today’s game marked the second time this year Wyoming has held its opponents to single digit shots.
The second half was more back and forth between the two teams. Wyoming and UNO each recorded six shot attempts and both goalkeepers recorded three saves apiece. UNO scored the lone goal of the half in the 56th minute that was just past the reach of Boehm into the right corner of the goal.
The Cowgirls will begin a four-match homestand on Friday, Sept. 13, against Weber State at 4 p.m. at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
