Yale Beats Central Connecticut 2-0
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Yale men’s soccer team was dominant in its final non-conference game of the season, and it showed in the result. Scott Armbrust scored late in the first half, and Keith Bond added an insurance goal early in the second half as the Bulldogs cruised to a 2-0 victory over Central Connecticut.
Yale (4-9-1) outshot the Blue Devils 17-3 in the game. Goalkeeper Blake Brown was not forced to make a save in posting his third shutout of the season.
“Overall, it was a really good, solid team performance,” said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. “We got contributions from a lot of different guys.
Tompkins was concerned that his team might be feeling the after-effects of Saturday’s heartbreaking overtime loss at Penn. That worry was put to rest quickly. Yale dominated the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Blue Devils 11-1.
“The team responded in the best possible way,” Tompkins said.
Still, it did take the Bulldogs a little time to finally break through. Despite Yale’s dominance, it was still scoreless heading into the final five minutes of the first half. Armbrust, though, quickly changed that when his shot deflected off a Central defender and just inside the post at 41:02. It was Armbrust’s first goal of the season, and freshman Henry Flugstad-Clarke notched his first career assist on the play.
Early in the second half, Bond, a sophomore, scored his first career goal. It came when he fired a shot into the top right corner at 55:21. Pablo Espinola, also a sophomore, earned his first career assist on the play.
“It was nice to get some different players on the score sheet,” Tompkins said.
The Bulldogs, who are three points out of first place in the Ivy League, finish up the season with three straight Ivy games – at Columbia on Saturday at 4 p.m., home for Brown on Nov. 9 and at Princeton on Nov. 16.
