Yale Blanks Bryant 4-0
Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of Yale men’s soccer, had a few concerns heading into Tuesday’s game at Bryant. First, his team was coming off an emotionally draining 2-2 overtime tie with No. 4 Michigan State. Second, midweek road games, especially ones with a late-afternoon start time, are always difficult. So Stannard had every reason to smile following a very impressive 4-0 victory.
“These [midweek] road games can be really tricky and sometimes are the hardest games,” he said. “This was much more challenging than the score indicates. There were some nervous moments that could have changed the dynamic. I’m really proud of the how the guys stuck together.”
Four different Bulldogs scored. Miguel Yuste and Nicky Downs had first-half goals, while Paolo Carroll and Adedeji (DJ) Palmer found the back of the net in the second half.
There were contributions from virtually the entire roster as 23 players saw action.
“I was happy to be able to rotate some players in,” Stannard said. “It was a great team effort.”
It also was more evidence of the progress the program is making under Stannard. Yale’s last midweek road victory came in 2013, 2-0 at Central Connecticut.
The four goals were the most in a game since a 4-1 win vs. Sacred Heart, also in 2013.
After an even opening 30 minutes, Yuste got the Bulldogs on the board at 33:24 with his first goal of the season, assisted by Carroll. Less than four minutes later, Downs tallied his team leading third goal. Aldo Quevedo and Ryan Matteo were credited with assists.
The all-important third goal came from Carroll at 62:12, and Palmer capped the scoring at 87:13.
Goalkeeper Tom Wallenstein made six saves to post the shutout.
The Bulldogs had only an 18-15 edge in shots, and both teams had seven corner kicks.
Yale returns to Reese Stadium to host George Mason on Friday. Kickoff is slated or 7 p.m.
