Yale Blanks Howard 3-0 At Rainy Reese
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale played very well in its season opener on Friday vs. FDU, dominating all facets of the game, except the most important one – the final score. The Bulldogs turned in another very impressive performance in game No. 2 on Sunday, and this time they were rewarded.
Newcomer Aldo Quevedo scored and added an assist as Yale rolled to a 3-0 victory over Howard at a very rainy Reese Stadium. Ryan Matteo and John Leisman also scored for the Bulldogs.
It was Yale’s largest margin of victory in a non-conference game since a 4-1 win at Sacred Heart in 2013.
“Our team really deserves this comprehensive win today, and I'm very happy for them to have success today because they definitely earned it,” said Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. “It was great for us to score several goals today and that should build confidence moving forward.”
Yale (1-1) opened the scoring at 22:57 when Matteo settled a short cross from Quevedo and fired it in from 10 yards out. It was Matteo’s first career goal. Josh Totte was credited with an assist on the goal as well.
The Bulldogs then added a pair of goals in a 2:27 stretch before halftime. The first came when Nicky Downs did some nifty dribbling before sending a cross to a wide-open John Leisman, who kicked it in at 32:38.
Quevedo, a rookie, tallied his first career goal shortly thereafter at 35:05. Lucas Kirby sent a perfect throw in to Quevedo, who raced toward goal. Howard keeper Carlos Caro stopped Quevedo’s first shot but couldn’t get in the way when the rebound came right back to Quevedo.
Much of the second half was played in a driving rain, but Yale was still in complete control. The Bulldogs maintained their big edge in possession and didn’t allow Howard a shot.
Goalkeeper Kees Schipper finished with two saves to post the shutout.
“Even with the excellent attacking, I'm most proud of the mentality our guys had,” Stannard said. “They were able to forget about the disappointment from Friday night and be focused on the task at hand today. We weren't phased by the weather and actually used it to our benefit. I'm also really happy with the defensive effort and to get a shutout. Good defending will always give us a chance to win games.”
In their first two games, the Bulldogs have combined to outshoot their opponents 38-12. They had a 21-8 edge in shots in Friday’s opener but fell to Fairleigh Dickinson 2-0. Yale outshot Howard (0-3) 17-4.
“To have 38 shots in the past two games is complete dominance, and it's great to put some of those in the back of the net today,” Stannard said. “I'm confident our finishing will get even better. Special congrats to Ryan Matteo and Aldo Quevedo on their first career goals.”
The Bulldogs play the final of three straight home games to open the season on Wednesday, hosting Hartford at 7 p.m.
“We now have another quick turnaround for a good Hartford team, also coming off a good win,” Stannard said. “Our preseason work has prepared us for this, though, and we will be ready.”
