Yale Blanks LIU Brooklyn 2-0
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – With the start of Ivy League play rapidly approaching, Yale is hitting its stride at just the right time. Aerial Chavarin scored early in the first half, and Keri Cavallo added an insurance goal early in the second half as the Bulldogs extended their unbeaten streak to four with an impressive 2-0 victory over LIU Brooklyn at Reese Stadium.
“It was a total team effort,” said Rudy Meredith, the Loring Family and Rudolph L. Meredith Head Coach of the Bulldogs. “Everybody played well. Our bench had an impact. Offense, defense, I thought we were really good.”
Yale (4-2-1) controlled play throughout, outshooting the Blackbirds 24-7.
It didn’t take long for one of those shots to find the back of the net. Ciara Ostrander sent a nice cross in front of the goal where Chavarin was able to get her foot on it and slip it past LIU goalkeeper Aline Allmann at 3:50.
The Bulldogs struck again 3:24 into the second half. Saje Brar, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week, weaved through traffic and centered a ball to Cavallo, who took one dribble forward and fired a shot into the top of the net at 48:24.
That was more than enough for a strong Yale defense that posted its third shutout of the season.
“Our backline was solid,” Meredith said. “We’ve worked on defending the long ball in practice and I thought we did that well.”
Goalkeeper Alyssa Fagel made five saves to earn the victory.
LIU (2-5-1) is coached by Eleri Earnshaw, who spent three seasons (2014-16) on Meredith’s staff. It was the first time Meredith has coached against one his assistants, although he does have experience matching up with his wife, Eva Meredith, when she was the head coach at Hartford early in his career.
“Eleri is a very good coach,” Meredith said. “I want her to do well after [tonight]. She’s going to turn that program around.”
The Bulldogs have one more test before the Ivy opener against Princeton on Sept. 22. They host Robert Morris on Sunday at 1 p.m.
