Zardes leads CSUB past Seattle 4-3
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Gyasi Zardes (R-Jr., Hawthorne, Calif., Leutzinger HS) scored two goals and had one assist to lead CSU Bakersfield past Seattle University 4-3 Sunday afternoon.
The Redhawks used Hamza Haddadi's penalty kick just 1:08 into the match to open an early lead. Zardes earned his sixth assist of the season when he set up Jesus Sanchez (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Castle Park HS) to tie the match at 28:48. Zardes gave the Roadrunners a 3-1 lead when he struck at 37:38 and with 17 seconds to go in the first half. His second goal of the match was a blast from 20 yards that found the lower left corner of the Seattle net.
Haddadi got the Redhawaks back to within one when he headed in a Brady Ballew pass at the 62:26 mark. Exactly one minute later Kory Kindle (Sr., Ventura, Calif., Ventura HS) scored what proved to be gamewinner with a header that came off a Joe Masumiya (R-So., Lakewood, Calif., Lakewood HS)free kick. Ballew capped off the scoring with a tally in the 67th minute.
Masumiya tied the CSUB Division I record for most assists in a match with three. Richard Menijvar put up three assists against UC Riverside Aug. 27, 2011. Zardes has scored five goals in the last three Roadrunner matches, bringing his season total to seven. He also leads the team in assists with six for a teamleading 20 points.
The Roadrunners head to the road next weekend, taking on San Jose State Friday night (7 p.m.) and playing at Seattle next Sunday at 1 p.m.
