Altman, Dunphy bag HS PotW honors
Lucas Altman, a junior forward from Science Hill High School (Johnson City, Tennessee), and Sunny Dunphy, a junior forward from Cathedral Catholic High School (San Diego, California), are the TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Players of the Week.
Altman broke onto the scene as a sophomore, when he was named the Tennessee Region 1-AAA Player of the Year as well as the Forward of the Year. He guided Science Hill to 21 wins and into the semifinals of the state tournament before bowing out. He’s off to a rip-roaring start to his junior season already, which marched into the Smoky Mountain Cup last week. Altman picked up where he left off in 2014, scoring four goals in two wins over Waterford (Utah) and Cookville (Tennessee). Thanks in large part to those goals, Science Hill took home the tournament title trophy.
Cathedral Catholic has been dominant in Southern California for some time now, but especially in the last two years. Much of that is thanks to incendiary UCLA commit Sunny Dunphy. In 2014, Dunphy recorded the game-winning goal for Cathedral in the Southern California regional finals, and she showed up for the same bright stage again this year. Last week, Cathedral smashed regional power Oaks Christian 6-1 in the title game, and Dunphy scored three of those and added an assist. That was the top-seeded Dons’ fourth title in the eight-year history of the tournament, and Dunphy’s prodigious goal-scoring ability has been instrumental in the last two.
Other boys finalists include Cole Cannon (Christian Brothers High School, Memphis, Tennessee) and Kobe Perez (Dalton High School, Dalton, Georgia). Other girls finalists include Paige Simoneau (Santiago High School, Corona, California).
The TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Player of the Week honor is designed to highlight a selection of the nation's rising stars populating the high school ranks. Coaches are free to nominate a boys or girls player each week by emailing their submission to Will Parchman at wparchman@topdrawersoccer.com. Be sure to include the school, position, grade year and any relevant stats from the previous week. The selection process will take into account a slew of factors from contribution to team results to individual accolades. Honorees are announced each Wednesday.
