Altman, Montgomery bag HS PotW honors
Lucas Altman, a junior forward from Science Hill High School (Johnson City, Tennessee), and Brittany Montgomery, a sophomore forward from Grayson High School (Loganville, Georgia), are the TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Players of the Week.
This week features a bit of TDS history, and Altman is at the center of it. On March 18, Altman was named the TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Player of the Week for his scoring exploits in a march to a pre-league cup title. This week, Altman guided a ranked Science Hill squad to a remarkable run to a district title with five goals spread across two matches. His selection as this week’s player of the week makes him the first repeat customer in the award’s history. After a three-goal outburst in the District 1-AAA semis, Altman scored both of the Hilltoppers’ goals in a 2-0 win over Dobyns-Bennett to capture the district crown.
For the entire length of the season, Georgia girls powerhouse Harrison had been perched atop the TopDrawerSoccer SIMA FAB 50 poll. After all, entering their playoff match against Grayson last week, they’d carried an incredible 39-game winning streak. But it didn’t get to 40 thanks to a timely headed goal from Montgomery that put a stopper on Harrison’s streak and its season. Grayson is marching on in the Georgia AAAAAA playoffs thanks to the first headed goal in Montgomery’s career, which broke a 1-1 deadlock with about six minutes left in the match. Grayson is still two wins from a state title, but the biggest goal of Montgomery’s career kept their season vitally alive.
Other boys finalists include Joe Milligan (Wando High School, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina) and Cameron Schneider (Hardin Valley Academy, Knoxville, Tennessee). Other girls finalists include Megan Massey (Mountain Vista High School, Highlands Ranch, Colorado) and Emma Kerns (Broad Run High School, Ashburn, Virginia).
The TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Player of the Week honor is designed to highlight a selection of the nation's rising stars populating the high school ranks. Coaches are free to nominate a boys or girls player each week by emailing their submission to Will Parchman at wparchman@topdrawersoccer.com. Be sure to include the school, position, grade year and any relevant stats from the previous week. The selection process will take into account a slew of factors from contribution to team results to individual accolades. Honorees are announced each Wednesday.
