Amador, Puliafico bag HS PotW honors
Garrett Amador, a junior forward from Servite High School (Anaheim, California), and Madison Puliafico, a junior goalkeeper from Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana, California), are the TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Players of the Week.
For two years, Servite has been attempting to knock over the door to the Division 1 CIF-SS title. It eluded them until this year, when they finally captured the crown. Amador had as big a hand in that success as anyone. In the semifinal, he scored a brilliant looping half-volley from 30 yards to ultimately seal a 3-2 victory, and he managed an assist in the final to secure victory. Amador, a junior, scored 22 goals this season and was the most productive forward on a team loaded down with Division I players. With another season in his quiver, Amador is already a hot prospect.
Elsewhere in Southern California, Mater Dei picked up the Division 1 girls title in a 3-2 decision on penalties over Laguna Hills. Mater Dei, which won its first CIF title since 2007, was unseeded in the playoffs and unranked in the final Division 1 poll. Despite that, the Monarchs wrestled fellow Laguna Hills into penalties at 1-1, which thrust keeper Puliafico into the spotlight. She managed saves on each of Laguna Hills’ final two penalty kicks, including the title-winner against West Coast FC teammate Rafaella Bucur.
Other boys finalists include Mekhi Honore (Greenbrier High School, Evans, Georgia) and Josh Peloquin (Rider High School, Wichita Falls, Texas). Other girls finalists include Megan Goodling (Myers Park High School, Charlotte, North Carolina) and Lauren Goetzman (Sierra Canyon School, Chatsworth, California).
The TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Player of the Week honor is designed to highlight a selection of the nation's rising stars populating the high school ranks. Coaches are free to nominate a boys or girls player each week by emailing their submission to Will Parchman at wparchman@topdrawersoccer.com. Be sure to include the school, position, grade year and any relevant stats from the previous week. The selection process will take into account a slew of factors from contribution to team results to individual accolades. Honorees are announced each Wednesday.
