FAB 50 HS Rankings Update: Sept. 16
St. Benedict's Prep and Berkshire School delivered a match worthy of the hype.
St. Benedict's entered the encounter as the Fall FAB 50 top-ranked boys team, while Berkshire topped the Prep School Top 10. Zachary Pereira delivered a dramatic match-winning goal with six seconds remaining as St. Benedict’s emerged with a 2-1 victory.
The win secures the Gray Bees’ spot as the nation’s top fall team. No harm is done to Berkshire’s bid for a third straight Prep Top 10 No. 1 finish.
St. Benedict’s added a week-ending 4-0 win over Chaminade (Mineola, N.Y.) to run its record to 5-0 in a week where there was no change among the FAB 50 Top 50.
In girls soccer, a rare cross-country trip brought together four of the nation’s elite fall-playing programs, and ended up with Santa Rosa, Calif., making quite a statement.
Girls FAB 50 No. 1 Maria Carrillo and No. 6 Montgomery of Santa Rosa swept Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) and Bishop O'Connell (Arlington, Va.), a pair of former Top 20-ranked programs.
The California sweep keeps Maria Carrillo and Montgomery, who have combined for three FAB 50 national titles, in the chase for FAB No. 1 this fall. Meanwhile, a loss by Skyline (Samammish, Wash.) last week, allowed three New Jersey teams – Northern Highlands, Lenape and Pennington School – to fall in line behind Maria Carrillo as this week’s Nos. 2, 3 and 4
