HS: Fall state, region rankings, Oct. 12
The first of the ranked teams had their seasons come to an end last week -- some by design, others by surprise.
Rapid City Stevens boys and O'Gorman Catholic girls wrapped up state No. 1 rankings over the weekend in South Dakota, the first of the fall states to complete the season. This week, Mississippi will crown its girls private school champion.
Meanwhile, former SIMA FAB 50 Top 25-ranked girls teams Carmel (Carmel, Ind.) and Noblesville (Noblesville, Ind.) sustained defeats early in the Indiana playoff system. Like many states, Indiana's geographical approach to the postseason leaves many of the serious title contenders meeting in the early rounds of the single-elimination event. Carmel fell to SIMA FAB 50-ranked Zionsville, its first loss of the season. Noblesville lost to regionally ranked and defending state champion Fishers (Fishers, Ind.).
Carmel's loss allows [Germantown Houston tn-w] (Germantown, Tenn.) to inherit the Mid-East girls No. 1 spot. Meanwhile, Davis (Kaysville, Utah) takes over No. 1 in West following a win by Maria Carrillo (Santa Rosa, Calif.) over rival Montgomery (Santa Rosa, Calif.).
Hinsdale Central (Hinsdale, Ill.) regains the Mid-East boys No. 1 ranking and Suffield (Suffield, Conn.) inherits the Northeast boys top spot.
