HS: Gateway Classic Day 3 recap
COMPLETE GATEWAY CITY SOCCER CLASSIC COVERAGE
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Christian Brothers College (Mo.) made it look easy and 30 miles away Milwaukee Marquette (Wis.) defied the odds to highlight the final day of play at the Gateway City Soccer Classic on Saturday.
Christian Brothers methodically pulled away from [Mount Carmel il-m] (Ill.) for a 4-1 victory in the Bracket A final played at CBC. Nick Dempster broke a scoring drought with two goals and one assist and Elijah Johnson and Sam Leach each added a goal and one assist as CBC (13-2-2) put at end to Mount Carmel’s 13-match win streak.
At SIU-Edwardsville, Nicholas Cheung’s final touch of the match was a perfectly placed shot in the right corner, giving Milwaukee Marquette a 3-2 overtime victory over South Kent School (Conn.). The contest was a rare meeting between nationally ranked high school and prep school programs.
South Kent School, which had defeated Kiski School (Pa.) 4-1 a day before Kiski beat Marquette 2-1, was the heavy favorite. South Kent’s speed and creativity put Marquette under a lot of pressure, but it was Marquette’s Jack Dallman who broke the ice with the opening goal. Alex Adjetey answered for South Kent. Marquette went ahead 2-1 on Cheung’s first goal of the day.
Early in the second half, Tomas Jamett’s free kick blast tied the score at 2, and it appeared South Kent had all the momentum. Marquette keeper Nik Martensson made three point-blank saves to keep the match tied. In the closing two minutes, South Kent was awarded a potential game-winning penalty kick, but Jamett bounced it off the crossbar, leading to overtime.
In St. Louis, CBC went ahead early in the match when Sam Leach converted a penalty kick for the second straight day. Soon after, Johnson played a long ball to space and Dempster collected the pass and scored for a 2-0 advantage. Mount Carmel got on the scoreboard, but in the second half Dempster made it 3-1 and Johnson then scored to make it 4-1.
In other championship matches, Rockwood Summit (Mo.) defeated Marquette (Mo.) 3-1 for the Bracket C title, Glenbrook North (Ill.) handled Evansville Memorial (Ind.) 5-1 in the Bracket D final, Louisville Collegiate (Ky.) routed Beloit Memorial (Wis.) 9-1 in the Bracket E championship, and Glenbrook South (Ill.) edged Belton (Mo.) 2-1 in the Bracket F final. [Washburn Rural was declared champion of the Round Robin A bracket.
