HS: Lady Eagle Day 2 standouts
ZIONSVILLE, Ind. – When nationally ranked teams fail to win, there’s usually disappointment.
But not on this day – not at least between these two coaches.
SIMA FAB 50 No. 1 Penn (Ind.) and No. 28 Carmel (Ind.) played to a 1-1 draw Saturday in the final and showcased match at the Lady Eagle Invitational.
“It was the second game of the day [for both teams] and there were a lot of dead kids,” Carmel coach Frank Dixon said. “A tie is probably a good thing. The only way we would play again is in the state final, and if that happens, nobody would be too cocky going into that game. But [a state final rematch] is a long way off.”
“[Carmel] outplayed us for large chunks of the game, they scored first so we faced adversity for the first time this season,” Penn coach Jeff Hart said. “But we responded. … We came here for games like this, to play a lot of kids and build toward later in the year.”
Carmel held a 16-12 edge in shots, 8-4 in shots on goal. Penn’s standout keeper Makenzie Wood made several dynamic saves to keep the game even. Meanwhile, Carmel’s defense was able to keep Penn’s scoring duo – Kristina Lynch and Brooke VanDyck – in check.
Carmel went ahead 1-0 midway through the first half when Kelsie James finished a perfect pass from Katherine Soderstrom in a play started by Tess Nihill. It was the first goal allowed this season by Penn, but Carmel’s lead was short-lived.
Lynch answered about one minute later with a shot in the upper right corner of the goal.
Despite the high-powered offensive nature of both teams, neither team could earn a second goal, leading to the first tie for both teams: Penn (8-0-1) and Carmel (6-1-1).
