HS: New No. 1s for Mid-Atlantic, West girls
Nationally, Mercy's (Md.) 1-0 girls soccer win over FAB 50 No. 1 McDonogh School (Md.) might have seemed like a shocker.
But in reality, it wasn't.
Mercy, also a FAB 50-ranked team, was No. 3 in last week's top-heavy Maryland state rankings. Mercy's 1-0 victory moves Mercy to No. 2 in this week's state rankings, while McDonogh falls to No. 3. Undefeated Archbishop Spalding (Md.), which has a win over Mercy, tops the Maryland rankings this week and is poised to move up in the FAB 50.
The Maryland shakeup leads to Conestoga (Pa.) taking over the No. 1 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic girls regional rankings this week. Cibola (N.M.) girls take over the top in the West region.
On the boys side, all seven regional No. 1s from last week held their position this week. Four of those teams will clash this weekend as Mid-East No. 1 Peoria Notre Dame (Ill.) takes on Great Lakes No. 1 St. Ignatius (Ohio) on Friday and East No. 1 St. Benedict's Prep (N.J.) clashes with Mid-Atlantic No. 1 Salesianum (Del.) on Saturday.
