HS: SIMA FAB 50, March 21
NEWS: The SIMA FAB 50 No. 1 jinx is alive and well for the spring girls soccer teams.
Two-time defedning SIMA FAB 50 spring national champion Tulsa Union (Tulsa, Okla.) started the season No. 1 and promptly lost its opener. That result allowed Collinsville (Ill.), which was coming off a state runner-up finish, to inherit the top ranking. And, like Tulsa Union, Collinsville lost its opener last week.
Now, St. Thomas Aquinas (Overland Park, Kan.), with 10 starters returning from last year's state title-winning team, advances to the top spot -- and the Saints start regular season play this week.
We'll see if Aquinas can kick the jinx and hang on to the top spot longer than its predecessors.
In boys soccer, cold, rainy and snowy weather in Virginia forced the postponement of most season openers for Northern Virginia powers. Those teams will start play this week. The highlight of last week's national boys action was the Smoky Mountain Cup in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Winter power Coppell (Texas) won the top flight. J.L. Mann (Greenville, S.C.) won the second flight. But some of the strongest results last week were put up by Tennessee programs. McCallie School (Tenn.) tied Coppell and placed second to keep its SIMA FAB 50 Top 10 ranking. Father Ryan (Nashville, Tenn.) won its group to vault to No. 15 this week. Station Camp (Tenn.) tied J.L. Mann en route to a second-place division finish, which results in a SIMA FAB 50 ranking this week. Also, Baylor School (Chattanooga, Tenn.) defeated former SIMA FAB 50-ranked Fort Payne (Ala.) to jump into the SIMA FAB 50 Top 25 this week.
BIG MOVERS: BOYS: Weber (Pleasant View, Utah). Weber takes over the top spot among the Utah teams and jumped 24 spots to No. 25 this week. ... GIRLS: J.L. Mann (Greenville, S.C.). J.L. Mann moves from No. 50 to No. 31 this week powered by Fort Mill's win over former N.C. No. 1 Weddington (Matthews, N.C.). J.L. Mann defeated Fort Mill earlier in the season.
