HS: Spring state, region rankings, June 5
Tears of joy and sadness flow this time of year.
On the happy side this week, Barrington (Ill.) and Webster Groves (Mo.) girls win state titles to secure lofty national rankings for the 2017 spring. Meanwhile, Saturday was a day of sadness for the girls at Notre Dame de Sion (Mo.) and Padua Academy (Del.). Notre Dame de Sion's bid to finish the year ranked No.1 in the nation ended with a loss to Webster Groves. Padua's run of conseuctive state titles ends at five following a loss to Middletown (Del.) in the final.
On the boys side last week, Iowa had a surprise -- yet familiar -- state champion in Iowa City West. This recent state power came out of the No. 8 slot to stun an undefeated top-seeded team in the quarterfinals and then finished the run with a victory over defending state champion. Iowa City entered postseason play with seven losses.
Things to watch for the week:
* The end of the boys high school season takes place this week with the Virginia High School League state semifinals and final. The Beach District teams were all eliminated in 6A, making the large school bracket a clash between Northern Virginia and Richmond-area schools. On the girls side, five of the state's top six-ranked teams are still alive, led by 6A North champ James Madison (Va.).
* Michigan and Wisconsin will play down to the state tournament qualifiers this week. These will be the last two states to close out the 2017 high school season.
