WINTER RANKINGS
SUMMARY: -- With a 136-match undefeated streak, a second straight perfect season and a dozen NCAA Division I-bound players, Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) was an easy call for SIMA FAB 50 No. 1. For the second straight year, the top public school ranking goes to the Texas 6A state champion, and this year it is Coppell (Texas), which finishes No. 2 in the SIMA FAB 50.
The girls side is a bit more complicated. Viera (Melbourne, Fla.) gets the nod at No. 1 after all of the pre-tournament favorites in California and Texas lost in postseason play. In defense of Viera, the team pinned the only losses on two SIMA FAB 50-ranked teams -- St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Niceville (Fla.) -- and beat Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.), as well. St. Thomas Aquinas went 3-0-1 at a tournament in California, which included California-North No. 1 San Ramon Valley (Danville, Calif.). Montverde went 2-1 at the National Elite Prep Showcase, and the Eagles' setback to was to nationally ranked Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas). Santa Margarita was the top-ranked California-South program, yet a 2-2 showing at NEPS banished this team national No. 1 consideration. That left the Texas champions, and Flower Mound (Texas) emerged with the 6A title after a fourth-place league finish. Viera's lone loss was a regular-season setback to eventual Florida 6A champ Oviedo (Fla.), but Oviedo had losses to Merritt Island (Fla.) and Bishop Moore (Orlando, Fla.) and settled on a No. 2 finish in the Orlando area behind Bishop Moore.
