HS: State, region rankings, April 25
Just a little more than a week after the final winter teams finished their season, the first of the spring states start playoffs.
Postseason play begins in Georgia this week and all eyes will be on a pair of undefeated teams -- Chattahoochee (Alpharetta, Ga.) boys and Marist School (Atlanta, Ga.) girls. In addition to holding down their respective state No. 1 rankings, both are in the SIMA FAB 50 Spring No. 1 title chase. In fact, Chattahoochee is ranked No. 1 among the boys teams. Marist, a Top 10 girls team, seems to keep inching closer to No. 1 each week.
Around the nation last week:
* A pair of juniors scored goals to lift Oak Mountain (Birmingham, Ala.) to a 2-1 boys soccer victory over [Germantown Houston tn-m] (Germantown, Tenn.) in a battle of undefeated teams. It might be the most significant out-of-state victory for Oak Mountain ever, and is likely to put this team in the SIMA FAB 50 Top 5.
* New Trier (Winnetka, Ill.) edged Loyola Academy (Wilmette, Ill.) 1-0 to capture the top division of the Pepsi Showdown girls event. The win marked a third straight Pepsi title for New Trier, a national Top 5 team.
* The luster of a national No. 2 vs. No. 3 boys showdown was lost when then No. 2 Wando (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) lost to unranked Bishop England (Charleston, S.C.) just days before the showdown. In turn, Wando then dealt the No. 3 River Bluff (Lexington, S.C.) a 3-1 setback, leaving both teams out of the No. 1 chase for the time being.
