HS: State, region rankings, March 7
Starting this week, and lasting for a month-and-a-half, two seasons collide.
California and Texas remain active to prolong the winter high school season. Meanwhile, the spring season is under way in several states -- mostly in the Southeast, led by Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
WINTER NEWS
No. 1 switches hands for both the California boys and girls state and region rankings this week.
Playoff losses by California-South Cathedral (Los Angeles, Calif.) and California-North Homestead (Cupertino, Calif.) opened the door for Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.) and Watsonville (Calif.) to inherit the boys soccer top spots, respectively. Buchanan enters this week's Southern California Regionals as the top-ranked California program, despite receiving only a No. 3 seed in the eight-team Division I playoffs.
On the girls side, Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.) moved into the No. 1 spot for California-South and the state rankings after winning the San Diego Open title, which featured four teams in this week's SIMA FAB 50. The Falcons could play their way into the national No. 1 chase with an SCR title this week.

SPRING NEWS
While only five of the 13 spring-playing boys states are in action, early results will topple the next SIMA FAB 50 rankings. The Preseason SIMA FAB 50 No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 teams have either taken losses or been held to ties.
Some of the more noteworthy performances have been turned in by Chattahoochee (Johns Creek, Ga.), Norman North (Norman, Okla.), River Bluff (Lexington, S.C.) and Wando (Mount Pleasant, S.C.). Those four teams are a combined 21-0 and are in line to all be SIMA FAB 50 Top 10 teams in Tuesday's rankings.
Play has started in seven of the 20 states with spring girls soccer, yet the movement is not as drastic as the boys. Some of the big movers include Auburn (Ala.), Marist School (Atlanta, Ga.) and Providence (Charlotte, N.C.). All three take over as state No. 1s this week.
