In a week full of playoff matches, only the girls team at Davis (Calif.) was able to finish off an undefeated season, and with it a SIMA FAB 50 Top 10 spring ranking for 2016.
Despite a change of coaches in recent years, Davis remains a power in the only California section that continues to play spring soccer. Davis (21-0-2) edged Rocklin (Calif.) 1-0 in the final that featured a pair of undefeated teams.
In North Carolina and Virginia, the state's independent schools completed postseason play last week with a couple interesting story lines.
Charlotte Latin (Charlotte, N.C.) returned to its familar perch as top the 3A program. Latin is coached by former UNC goalkeeper Lee Horton, who has rolled up 855 wins and 17 state titles in his 31 seasons as the school's boys and girls head coach. Overall, he has 994 high school victories.
A somewhat unknown, but very talented St. Catherine's School (Richmond, Va.) team defeated Norfolk Collegiate (Norfolk, Va.) for the state's independent Division I state title. St. Catherine's had four players named to the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association all-state team, including the player of the year, and all four are bound for NCAA Division I programs. Player of the year Seeley Yoo and Virginia Jesselson have signed with Davidson, Addie Wright signed with Wake Forest and the lone junior in the group, Emily Wigg, has committed to Richmond.
