HS: State, Region rankings, Oct. 10
The 14 region No. 1 teams -- seven boys and seven girls -- combined to go 28-0 last week to remain atop their respective ranking.
Beyond the top spots, there were quite a few shakeups, especially in the Mid-East boys and girls rankings.
The first state titles of the 2016 fall season were handed out last week with Aberdeen Central (S.D.) boys and Rapid City Central (S.D.) girls winning the South Dakota large school state titles. Aberdeen Central completed a 15-0 season, which likely will earn the team a region ranking once some other higher ranked squad fall in postseason play.
Here are a few other highlights from last week:
BOYS
St. Benedict's Prep (N.J.) and Salesianum (Del.) played to a 1-1 draw in what is becoming a very intense rivalry between the East Coast private school powers.
St. Ignatius (Ohio) traveled to Colorado where it swept a pair of matches of Cherry Creek (Colo.) and Regis Jesuit (Colo.). With Cherry Creek playing in Gateway, and going 0-3, and Regis Jesuit competing in the Jesuit Classic, St. Ignatius' performance can be relatively gauged among top teams in several states. St. Ignatius played the weekend without senior standout Steven Milhoan, a Xavier commit, who is sidelined by injured. Even without Milhoan, St. Ignatius posted a 4-0 win over Cherry Creek, which is now 8-0 against Colorado teams and 0-4 against out-of-state opponents.
GIRLS
Playoffs are starting to takes its toll on ranked teams in Indiana. The regional postseason format, in use by many states, means several of the top programs in the state have to meet early in postseason play. Indiana No. 5 Carmel, No. 6 [Bishop Chatard in-w] and No. 7 Castle all made early playoff exits, along with last week's state Nos. 8, 9 and 10 teams.
