HS: State, Region rankings, Oct. 24
Two state record undefeated streaks were put to the test last week with differing outcomes.
The Davis (Utah) girls team edged Fremont (Utah) 2-1 in the Utah 5A state final, extending its state-record win streak to 44 matches and securing the state, region and SIMA FAB 50 No. 1 rankings for the 2016 season.
Meanwhile, in New Jersey, the boys program at St. Benedict's Prep (N.J.) lost to Delran (N.J.), marking the Gray Bees' first instate loss since Oct. 15, 2009 -- a string of 69 matches where the team went 68-0-1.
The Davis and St. Benedict's matches stole the headlines in what was a busy high of high school action.
Here are a few other highlights from last week:
BOYS
Mid-Atlantic No. 1 Conestoga (Pa.) closed out a perfect regular season for the first time in school history with a 2-1 win over Lower Merion (Pa.). ... Louisville Collegiate (Ky.) survived Kentucky's "group of death" to win the Region 7 title. Collegiate knocked out previously undefeated Louisville Trinity (Ky.). St. Xavier upset then undefeated DuPont Manual. Louisville Collegiate then defeated St. Xavier for the second time in a week to claim the region crown. Region 7 programs have won 11 of the past 20 single-class state titles in Kentucky and 25 of the 44 awared since 1972. ... It was a complete wipeout in Michigan as every team in the Top 5 lost in playoff action last week.
GIRLS
All 15 teams in the Ohio Region won their playoff opener last week resulting in absolutely no change in the ranking order. But it does set up the likelihood these top programs will soon go head-to-head with a lot on the line. ... Indiana has the most unusual playoff format with the semi-state (basically state quarterfinal) and state semifinal matches played on the same day. Favored Penn (Ind.) and Brebeuf Jesuit (Ind.) swept their Saturday contests to set up the expected state final clash between 21-0-1 Penn and 22-1-1, two-time defending state champ Brebeuf this weekend.
