HS: Weekend wrap, region rankings, April 15
We're well into spring, yet the Winter FAB 50 girls No. 1 will be settled this weekend.
It comes down to two teams -- current No. 1 Tompkins (Katy, Texas) and JSerra (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.).
Tompkins enters this week's state tournament with a perfect record. But anything less than a state title will turn over the top ranking to JSerra, the California power which has been long done for the season. Although Tompkins is perfect so far, that is no given it can win the state title. On paper, Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas), the current FAB 50 No. 4 team, is the favorite with a loaded lineup. A Southlake Carroll title would likely put that powerhouse at No. 3 for the final rankings. Allen (Texas) and Lake Travis (Austin, Texas), both four-loss teams that have been hot of late, also pose a challenge for the 6A crown.
Switching to the spring season, a loss by former Virginia boys No. 1 Albemarle (Charlottesville, Va.) results in new state, region and FAB 50 No. 1s this week. Mills Godwin (Richmond, Va.) takes over the state and region No. 1 position. The new FAB 50 No. 1 will be released Tuesday.
