HS: Weekend Wrap, regional rankings, May 20
One FAB 50 spring national title has been settled. It might be nearly a month before the other is resolved.
Dalton (Ga.) boys team completed a perfect season with a 4-1 Class 6A state final win over FAB 50-ranked Gainesville. The result keeps Dalton as the top-ranked team in Georgia and will keep this powerhouse No. 1 in the spring FAB 50.
On the girls side, Novi (Mich.) remains No. 1 in the state, rgion and national rankings, but Michigan won't settle its playoffs until June 15.
Several states crowned champions this past week, and the only major surprises happened in Wyoming.
BOYS: Springdale (Ark.) completed a coast-to-coast run as No. 1 in Arkansas this season. Springdale went 18-0 against Arkansas programs, but it's 0-2 record against Oklahoma teams keeps in lower in the regional rankings. ... Westminster Schools (Ga.) and Dalton started 1-2 in the state rankings, and both end in the top two spots, with Westminster checking in at No. 2. ... Lambert (Suwanee, Ga.) nailed down the No. 3 ranking in Georgia with a 7A state crown to cap an impressive season. ... Omaha South (Omaha, Neb.) edged Creighton Prep (Omaha, Neb.) in an epic state final between the state's two reigning powers. After splitting their regular season meetings, these teams stayed ranked side-by-side for much of the season. ... In Wyoming, undefeated and heavily favored Thunder Basin (Wyo.) was upset by five-loss Jackson in the state final. Jackson is a relative newcomer to 4A after playing a dominant role in 3A for a number of seasons.
GIRLS: Bryant (Ark.) edged Conway for the Arkansas 7A crown between the state's top two-ranked programs. Bryant finished 18-2-0 with its only losses to Conway. Conway ended 20-2-1. Conway's other loss was to [Bishop Kelly ok-w] (Tulsa, Okla.). ... North Gwinnett (Ga.), a regionally ranked team, surprised both Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.) and Lambert (Suwanee, Ga.) to capture the 7A crown. The result reshuffles the state and regional order in Georgia. ... Millard West (Omaha, Neb.) closed out the season with a 2-0 state final win over Omaha Marian (Omaha, Neb.) to secure a final regional No. 1 ranking. ... And in Wyoming, Thunder Basin (Gillette, Wyo.) girls upended favored Cheyenne Central (Cheyenne, Wyo.) in the state final.
