CALIFORNIA: Joe Penaflor of Santa Ana (Calif.) earned career coaching win No. 300 on Wednesday night as Santa Ana defeated Coasta Mesa 4-1. ... Bishop Amat (Calif.) boys upended Cathedral (Calif.) boys 3-2 in overtime Wednesday, ending Cathedral's 57-league match undefeated streak.
FLORIDA: Montverde Academy (Fla.) girls soccer coach Robbie Aristodemo reached the 150-win mark in his ninth season at the helm of the Florida power. The team is coming off back-to-back undefeated season and is undefeated during the 2019-2020 season, as well. He has a career mark of 151-19-4.
LOUISIANA: Matthew Carter, a 17-year-old football and soccer player at Comeaux, died Wednesday after sustaining gunshot wounds during an armed robbery, WAFB and WATC-TV reported Wednesday.
NEW YORK: Officials in Nassau County (part of Long Island) are looking into an expansion of its lopsided score policy, according to a report in Newsday. Currently, the policy deals only with football. The idea is to expand it to other sports, including soccer. One idea discussed for soccer is the possibility of the adding an additional player to the field for the team that is trailing by a certain number of goals.
TEXAS: Just hours after coaching a match Tuesday, Jan. 13, longtime [University tx-m] (Waco, Texas) coach Mike Chapman passed away, according to published reports. He was 58. The family believes he suffered a heart attack, according to this tribute from the Waco Tribune. Chapman coached University for 26 seasons, had more than 500 career wins, led the team to 21 playoff appearances, 13 district titles and a state title in 2013.
