Huizar, Isobe bag HS PotW honors
Daniel Huizar, a senior forward from Cathedral High School (Los Angeles, California), and Kasey Isobe, a junior defender from Mililani High School (Mililani, Hawaii), are the TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Players of the Week.
As the No. 1 seed of the Southern Section Division 3 playoffs, Cathedral has plenty of expectation loaded onto its shoulders. Times like these require outsize performances from the team’s biggest contributors, and Huizar stepped up to the plate in a big way in Cathedral’s postseason opener. Less than a week after netting the winner in a 1-0 win over Salesian, Huizar scored Cathedral’s first four goals en route to a whopping 5-0 win over Glendora in the first round of the playoffs. Cathedral marches on as Division 3 favorites, and big performances from players like Huizar is a massive reason why.
Isobe is perhaps one of the most unlikely players to land player of the week honors, but her performance and career-defining goal last week certainly helped her earn the title. Mililani entered Hawaii’s girls state championship game against undefeated Iolani as distinct underdogs. But the teams scratched and clawed through regulation and then overtime without a goal. The game plunged into double overtime, and Isobe launched a speculative long ball toward goal with time expiring. Isobe’s shot befuddled the keeper and managed to sneak in the net, which proved to be the game and state title winner. Not a bad way to score your only goal of the season.
Other boys finalists include Tristan Cavazos (Clark High School, San Antonio, Texas) and Garrett Amadour (Servite High School, Anaheim, California). Other girls finalists include Megan Monier (Liberty High School, Brentwood, California) and Kate Summers (Highland Park High School, University Park, Texas).
