Prep Top 10 teams enter title week
It's championship week for the nation's fall-playing prep school programs, with quite a bit on the line.
One boys and one girls team from the mix of the NEPSAC Prep A, NEPSAC Prep B and Pennsylvania Independent tournaments this week will end up as the top-ranked prep school for the 2014 season come Sunday evening.
Loomis Chaffee (Conn.) and Berkshire School (Mass.) are the top seeds in the NEPSAC Prep A boys playoffs, and ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the Prep Top 10. Milton (Mass.) is undefeated, seeded third in Prep A, and could earn a lofty ranking with a title this weekend. South Kent School (Conn.) and Lawrence Academy (Mass.) are the top seeds in Prep B and both are in line for a high ranking with a title this week.
The wild card is the Pennsylvania Independent Schools tournament, which has a hybrid of prep schools and FAB 50-eligible high school programs. The most intriguing player in the field is Mercersburg Academy (Pa.), which is undefeated and ranked No. 3 in this week's Prep Top 10. Mercersburg Academy faces FAB 50-ranked Haverford School (Pa.) in the semifinals with a chance to meet Prep Top 10-ranked Hill School (Pa.) in the final. Mercersburg could make claim to Prep Top 10 No. 1 with a Pa. title win over Hill School, coupled with Berkshire and South Kent NEPSAC titles. Hill defeated South Kent, which upset Berkshire late in the season.
On the girls side, things are a bit more clear. No. 1 Choate Rosemary Hall (Conn.) has spent most of the season in the top spot, and Nobles (Mass.) stands at No. 2 in the Prep Top 10. The teams are seeded 1-2 in the Prep A playoffs, and if one of those teams claim the title this weekend, it also would secure the Prep No. 1 ranking, as well.
