Quijada, Aycock bag HS PotW honors
Ezequiel Quijada, a junior forward from Canoga Park High School (Canoga Park, California), and Treva Aycock, a junior forward from Harrison High School (Kennesaw, Georgia), are the TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Players of the Week.
Even before the season began, Canoga Park coach Jake Gwin told the LA Times Quijada is “probably the best player I’ve ever had.” After scoring 64 goals in his first two high school seasons, that wasn’t idle chatter. He set a new benchmark this season, and he upped his season-long tally to a school record 37 goals in a big week last week. Quijada scored a pair of goals in Canoga Park’s section quarterfinal victory over Hawkins, which pushed the team into the CIF section semifinals. The weekend before, Quijada scored four in the team’s playoff opener. Now, can the record-breaking junior lead his side to title-winning glory?
Aycock represents the start of the spring season, which recently kicked off across the country. That includes Georgia. Last season, Aycock guided Harrison to an unbeaten season and put in 38 goals as just a sophomore to guide the Lady Hoyas to a state title. She recently picked up where she left off for a rapid start to her junior season. Aycock has already netted four goals and two assists in Harrison’s perfect start to the season. The Lady Hoyas are currently on a 26-match win streak with Aycock in fine form. She’s a 2017 commit to Furman.
Other boys finalists include Barrick Roberts (St. Paul’s High School, Covington, Louisiana) and Oscar Flores (Servite High School, Anaheim, California). Other girls finalists include Ally Bayer (Westwood High School, Austin, Texas) and Jennifer Westendorf (Grayson High School, Loganville, Georgia).
The TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Player of the Week honor is designed to highlight a selection of the nation's rising stars populating the high school ranks. Coaches are free to nominate a boys or girls player each week by emailing their submission to Will Parchman at wparchman@topdrawersoccer.com. Be sure to include the school, position, grade year and any relevant stats from the previous week. The selection process will take into account a slew of factors from contribution to team results to individual accolades. Honorees are announced each Wednesday.
