SIMA FAB 50 HS Rankings Update: Nov. 4
This could prove to be a milestone week in the 16-year history of the SIMA FAB 50 soccer rankings.
One school has a chance at finishing atop both the boys and girls high school soccer rankings, a feat never before accomplished -- in any season, which covers 45 ranking seasons (15 from each fall, winter and spring) since the FAB 50's inception in 1999.
McDonogh School (Owings Mills, Md.) has been No 1 in boys soccer for most of the school year, while the girls program slowly has inched up to No. 2. The McDonogh School boys team plays in the MIAA tournament this week, with the title match set for Sunday. A clean sweep will give the Eagles a second straight FAB 50 crown while extending its undefeated run to nearly 50 matches.
Meanwhile, Monday night, girls No. 1 Northern Highlands (Allendale, N.J.) lost to No. 4 Immaculate Heart Academy (Township of Washington, N.J.), ending an 88-match undefeated streak. That result, however, will not be factored into the FAB 50 until next week since each Tuesday's updated rankings reflect matches played through Sunday of each week. McDonogh School, with a powerhouse lineup featuring several major college recruits, and IHA, now with wins over two Top 10 teams, both have strong claims to be the next No. 1.
The only school with boys and girls FAB 50 crowns to its name is Broughton (Raleigh, N.C.). The Broughton girls won spring FAB 50s in 2000, 2001 and 2003. The boys program took a fall FAB 50 No. 1 ranking in 2007.
