Top teams vie for NSCAA regional boys honor
The NSCAA boys regional polls have returned.
For the first time since the fall season came to a close in November, the NSCAA regional polls are back to take stock in winter soccer. For the boys, that means a handful of top teams along the country's southern rim are vying for state titles this season.
Here's a glimpse at the first batch of rankings from Regions I-IV and some top stories from each.

Region I
Florida is well on its way through the winter season, and Montverde is easily the first Region 1 top team of the winter. The Eagles still haven't lost at 15-0-1, which extends their unbeaten run from 2010 all the way to 91 games. The team hasn't lost since current coach Mike Potempa took over nearly four years ago. North Broward and Sunlake both clock in on the national poll as well this week, and the two state title contenders are a combined 30-0-2 so far this season. Melbourne has the unique and very real opportunity to capture both boys and girls state titles this season.
1. Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.)
2. Sunlake (Land O' Lakes, Fla.)
3. North Broward Prep (Coconut Creek, Fla.)
4. Melbourne (Melbourne, Fla.)
5. West Orange (Winter Garden, Fla.)
6. American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.)
7. Palm Bay (Melbourne, Fla.)
8. Merritt Island (Merritt Island, Fla.)
9. Cypress Bay (Weston, Fla.)
t10. Oviedo (Oviedo, Fla.)
t10. Steinbrenner (Lutz, Fla.)
Region II
This region stretches to reach both Louisiana and Mississippi, the deep south's only two winter-playing states, and St. Paul's is a solid choice as the initial No. 1. Despite losing to local rival Jesuit in two of the past three state championship games, St. Paul's appears to be asserting some control atop the state's rankings as the team to beat this season. Northwest Rankin assumes the position as Mississippi's top boys team after a 12-0-0 start to the season.
1. St. Paul's School (Covington, La.)
2. Brother Martin (New Orleans, La.)
3. Northwest Rankin (Brandon, Miss.)
4. Catholic (Baton Rouge, La.)
5. Madison Central (Madison, Miss.)
6. Bolton (Alexandria, La.)
7. Biloxi (Biloxi, Miss.)
8. Tupelo (Tupelo, Miss.)
9. St. Louis Catholic (Lake Charles, La.)
10. Northlake Chrisian (Covington, La.)
Region III
After a long offseason, Texas is finally ready to open its 2014 season that will terminate with the state championship games in Georgetown in April. Coppell broke a streak of frustration by making a dramatic run to the 5A state title last season, and we'll get a taste of just how good this program is next weekend when it travels to Florida for possible meetings with three national top 10 teams, including No. 1 Montverde. Elsewhere, Dallas Jesuit is always an interesting team to monitor. Private and public schools are separated into different leagues in Texas, but Jesuit was admitted to play in the public school ranks in 2003 and became the first private school to win a UIL state title in 2010. They begin the year in Texas ranked No. 7.
1. Coppell (Coppell, Texas)
2. Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas)
3. Rivera (Brownsville, Texas)
4. The Woodlands (The Woodlands, Texas)
5. Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas)
6. Seven Lakes (Katy, Texas)
7. Jesuit (Dallas, Texas)
8. MacArthur (San Antonio, Texas)
9. Klein (Spring, Texas)
10. McKinney Boyd (McKinney, Texas)
Region IV
Soccer never stops in Calfornia, and the winter is without question the busiest time of year in SoCal. That opens up one of the most fertile grounds for high school soccer in America for inclusion in the NSCAA poll, which makes the winter Region IV arguably the most talent-rich high school region anywhere all year. San Clemente drew fellow top California side Alisal 1-1 to leave the question as to the state's top team open ended, but there's little question the San Clemente juggernaut will be favored in every game this year. Despite losing a raft of top talent like current Virginia star Riggs Lennon, Brophy Prep is once again in line for an Arizona state title as the state's best.
1. San Clemente (San Clemente, Calif.)
2. Loyola (L.A., Calif.)
3. Edison (Huntington Beach, Calif.)
4. Brophy Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.)
5. Hamilton (L.A., Calif.)
6. Servite (Anaheim, Calif.)
7. La Quinta (Westminster, Calif.)
8. Bellarmine Prep (San Jose, Calif.)
9. Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara, Calif.)
10. Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.)
