Valdivia, Hromatko pick up HS POTW honors
Max Valdivia, a junior forward from Cathedral High School (Los Angeles, California), and Mallory Hromatko, a senior forward from Monte Vista High School (Danville, California), are the TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Players of the Week.
Cathedral produces a steady stream of next-level talent, but the loss of centerpiece Axel Mendez after last year left a noticeable void. Enter Valdivia, who’s helped drag Cathedral back to the spotlight this season with a string of enormous match-defining performances. Last week, Valdivia scored in overtime to lift Cathedral to a 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Salesian in a matchup of teams ranked in the TopDrawerSoccer.com FAB 50. The week before, Validivia scored the winner in the third place game at the prestigious Montverde Academy Soccer Tournament in Florida.
Hromatko, meanwhile, is somehow managing to improve upon a 2013-14 season in which she was named the Bay Area News Group’s East Bay Player of the Year. Her Monte Vista side is 13-0-0 this winter and ranked No. 1 in the FAB 50 through last week, and Hromatka is the team’s attacking rudder. As a withdrawn forward, Hromatko put together a scintillating string of games last week by scoring three of the team’s four goals in 2-0 wins over San Ramon Valley and Pleasanton Foothill. Hromatko is verbally committed to UC Santa Barbara for this fall.
Other boys finalists include Jose Silva (Cypress Bay High School, Weston, Florida) and Kayvon Parsa (El Camino Real High School, Woodland Hills, California). Other girls finalists include Remy Mathews (Aliso Niguel High School, Aliso Viejo, California) and Jasmine Edwards (Castro Valley High School, Castro Valley, California).
The TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Player of the Week honor is designed to highlight a selection of the nation's rising stars populating the high school ranks. Coaches are free to nominate a boys or girls player each week by emailing Will Parchman at wparchman@topdrawersoccer.com. Be sure to include the school and any relevant stats from the previous week. The selection process will take into account a slew of factors from contribution to team results to individual accolades. Honorees are announced each Wednesday.
