2017 Boys Top 150 Rankings Update
The 2017 boys IMG Academy Top 150 fall update is out today. Changes and additions to the list abound as these players mature as well as transition from the youngest age group in the Development Academy. The top four of Taitague, Gruno, Adams, and Nelson are key members of either the newly-named U.S. U16 Men’s National Team or the current U17 MNT Residency program, and continue to impress as the top players in the country.
Part of that new U16 MNT group are a couple of players making significant contributions to their Development Academy side. Philadelphia Union center back Matthew Real and outside back Andrew Aprahamian have both earned starting roles for the MLS Academy’s U16s, ranked No. 3 in the Grande Sports Academy TeamRank Top 25, and they are part of a backline that has given up just six goals this season. Real, in particular, was named a top player at August’s U15 Boys National Team camp in Southern California, and his ranking climbs from No. 48 to No. 36. Aprahamian impressed at the camp as well, climbing significantly to No. 38.

Even more players either raised their ranking or make their first appearance this time around as a result of a plethora of recommendations combined with statistics to back them up. A few of those are Kendall SC forward Wilterlynd Inalien, St. Louis Scott Gallagher Metro goalkeeper Seth Stiebel, Capital Railhawks Academy-CASL forward/midfielder Alex Rose, and Georgia United defensive center mid River Smith. A former member of Boca United at the U14 Development Academy level, Inalien is now on Kendall’s U16 DA roster, but has already played seven matches at the U18 level, raising his ranking from No. 82 to No. 64. Stiebel is touted as one of the top goalkeepers in the country, attended August’s U15 BNT camp, and debuts at No. 80. Rose is lighting up the score sheet for CASL’s U16s with 11 goals in 13 matches for the North Carolina based squad, putting him fourth in the nation in scoring and No. 85 in our rankings. River Smith, who comes in at No. 105, is a full time starter in the midfield for the Southeast Division’s second place Georgia United, and is a key component in the team’s success so far this season.
In addition to the IMG Academy 150 update, we have made key changes to the regional rankings which will be unveiled throughout the week. Some of the additions include St. Louis Scott Gallagher defensive midfielder Max Kleeman, DC United midfielder Jason Ferrufino, Shattuck St. Mary’s defender Carson Kurth, Colorado Rush forward Matt Kintzie, and many more. Keep checking back to see who else made the lists.
As far as how we arrive at the rankings, it’s no simple task.
We keep a national database of players as the starting point for our rankings (if you’re not in it, enter a profile here).
We track an extensive list of selections to national team camps and other honors including USSF Development Academy (Boys), ECNL (Girls), and U.S. Youth Soccer National League event and season awards, plus U.S. Soccer Training Centers, ODP, id2 and other player identification programs.
From there we look at additional signs of top player performance in a club environment, with the help of an extensive network of observers around the country. The priority here is for club, college, national team and other select team coaches on the ground, but especially when we can gain corroborating opinions. The more layers of opinions we can gain accumulate the better, as our role is primarily to aggregate those viewpoints, rather than making our own determination as to a player’s quality.
As a matter of policy, we never share which coaches said what about whom so that coaches will be freer to share their assessments. Another policy is that parents’ opinions about their own children are not considered, but you are welcome to provide feedback about honors and other details that may be of help to us in keeping their profiles up to date as well as our challenge of sifting through thousands of players nationwide. That kind of data can be helpful, but the: “How can you not have rated my kid? He is awesome” communique, while compelling, will be consigned to the virtual trash.
In the end, there’s always some level of subjectivity about players, because after all, how good someone is relative to someone else is largely a matter of opinion, but we do our best to make our rankings as educated an opinion as can be.
The rankings will be updated every quarter. Keeping current rankings for 8 classes of 150 players each is no small task, and it is counterintuitive to think the rankings would change daily or weekly. We will announce each update.
So that’s it. You can see the newest version of the rankings here.
