2018 Boys IMG Academy 150 update
The IMG Academy Top 150 rankings update for boys in the 2018 graduating class is out today, and the U.S. youth national teams have been busy once again since our last update. Georgia United’s Andrew Carleton remains the top player in the IMG Academy 150, and finished April’s Tournament delle Nazioni in Italy with six goals to lead the U.S. U15 Boys National Team to a tournament championship. Chivas USA’s Carlos Anguiano-Dias is also making the most of his opportunities with the U15 BNT, climbing into the top five after impressing with the YNT while still finding time to start 36 matches in midfield with Chivas USA’s U14 and U16 Development Academy squads.
Carleton, Anguiano, and seven others in the top ten are currently in Argentina with the U15s, and with them is Chivas USA forward Misael Becerra, making his first appearance with this group and in our top 150. Becerra is an exciting attacking talent with 21 goals in Development Academy action this season. He also took part in U.S. Soccer’s inaugural futures camp in May.
Other players making either their debut or a comeback in the IMG Academy 150 include Revolution Empire attacking mid Isaac McGinnis, LA Galaxy defender Ian Lonergan, Triangle FC Alliance defender Payne Russell, and Carolina Rapids forward TJ Paul. McGinnis has been out of the 150 since the initial ranking came out last spring, but reappears with this update after stepping up with Empire’s U16s toward the end of the season, leading the squad to two crucial wins over Oakwood and Seacoast United. Lonergan was first spotted by our staff at a Development Academy showcase in 2013, and has progressed through the LA Galaxy system, starting 34 matches at center back for the ninth-ranked Galaxy 16s during the regular season. Lonergan also earned his first youth national team invitation with the U16 BNT this month. Russell is a top defender from Triangle FC Alliance that plays up on Triangle FC Alliance’s 98 Region III premier league team instead of the 14 Academy, while Paul appeared in 29 matches for the Rapids 14s this season scoring nine goals, and recently received an invitation to train at Ajax FC in Holland.

Players climbing within the IMG Academy 150 include Pateadores forward/defender Wolfgang Prentice, LA Galaxy forward Kyle Holcomb, and De Anza Force goalkeeper Brady Scott. Prentice was invited to March’s U15 BNT camp as an outside defender, but plays forward for Teddy Chronopoulos’ 14s, scoring 19 goals in 26 starts this season. Holcomb is one of the most efficient scorers in the Academy, netting 20 in just 21 appearances for the Galaxy during the regular season. Scott is the starting goalkeeper for De Anza Force’s 16s and has earned two invitations with the U16 BNT this spring.
In addition to the IMG Academy 150 update, we have made key changes to the regional rankings which will be unveiled throughout the week. On Friday we will highlight some of these regionally ranked players, and you can see the rest of the lists as well. Some of the additions include St. Louis Scott Gallagher wide midfielder Jacob Bernson, Chivas USA defender Jose Delgado, Boca United midfielder Riley Ferch, and many more.
As far as how we arrive at the rankings, it’s no simple task.
We keep a national database of players as the starting point for our rankings (if you’re not in it, enter a profile here).
We track an extensive list of selections to national team camps and other honors including USSF Development Academy (Boys), ECNL (Girls), and U.S. Youth Soccer National League event and season awards, plus U.S. Soccer Training Centers, ODP, id2 and other player identification programs.
From there we look at additional signs of top player performance in a club environment, with the help of an extensive network of observers around the country. The priority here is for club, college, national team and other select team coaches on the ground, but especially when we can gain corroborating opinions. The more layers of opinions we can gain accumulate the better, as our role is primarily to aggregate those viewpoints, rather than making our own determination as to a player’s quality.
As a matter of policy, we never share which coaches said what about whom so that coaches will be freer to share their assessments. Another policy is that parents’ opinions about their own children are not considered, but you are welcome to provide feedback about honors and other details that may be of help to us in keeping their profiles up to date as well as our challenge of sifting through thousands of players nationwide. That kind of data can be helpful, but the: “How can you not have rated my kid? He is awesome” communique, while compelling, will be consigned to the virtual trash.
In the end, there’s always some level of subjectivity about players, because after all, how good someone is relative to someone else is largely a matter of opinion, but we do our best to make our rankings as educated an opinion as can be.
The rankings will be updated three times per year. Keeping current rankings for 8 classes of 150 players each is no small task, and it is counterintuitive to think the rankings would change daily or weekly. We will announce each update.
So that’s it. You can see the newest version of the rankings here.
