Academy Recap: U14s end, U16s begin
WESTFIELD, Indiana - Monday marked the end of the Development Academy U14 National Showcase and the start of the U16 National Showcase. The U14 Showcase kicked off early in the morning as some teams had to get out of town to catch flights. With all of the teams in action before noon, the Grand Park Sports Campus was busy.

FC Golden State U14 5-1 New England Revolution
Heading into Monday’s game, New England Revolution was 2-0 at the Showcase and had yet to concede a goal. The Southern California side put an end to the unblemished record and the shutout streak.
FC Golden State scored the opener in the 16th minute when Dorian Morrison streaked down the left side of the field and hit a low cross that a retreating New England Revolution defender accidentally kicked into his own net.
Two minutes later, FC Golden State doubled the lead when Oscar Velazquez played in a pass for Arturo Vasquez, who had an easy finish.
In the final 10 minutes before halftime, Revolution had a couple of looks to get back in the game. Timothy Ennin’s shot from inside the box went over the bar in the 32nd minute. Two minutes later, Ennin got on the end of a cross from Connor Haskell, but the shot went wide of the target.
In the second half, Gustabo Cassemiro set up Laszlo Dorogi for a chance in the 50th minute, but John Samano made an excellent save to keep the shutout going. Samoan made a couple of good saves in the second half, but his clean sheet came to an end an in the 65th minute.
Cassemiro put home his 22nd goal of the season for the Revs to bring the MLS Academy within one goal.
However, FC Golden State dominated the last 12 minutes of the game after the Revs left large holes open while in pursuit of another goal. Juan Ramirez scored in the 68th minute. Morrison then added two more goals in the 76th and 78th minutes.
FC Golden State ended the event with a 2-1 record. The Southern California squad scored 11 goals and conceded six while in Indiana. For the season, FC Golden State recorded one of the best records in the Development Academy with 24 wins, four draws, and only two losses.
Cedar Stars Academy U14 5-0 Placer United
The opening 20 minutes between Placer United and Cedar Stars Academy were relatively even with neither team generating many chances. However, Cedar Stars coach Anthony Nixon made an adjustment midway through the first half that changed the game. Nixon switched Santiago Martinez from a wide role into a central role and then brought Alexander Mieles into that wide right position. Martinez opened up the game from his new No. 10 role and Mieles flourished with the freedom to take on his defender in the channel.
Mieles struck the first goal in the 28th minute when played a nice combination near the top of the box and then beat the keeper with a well-placed shot.
Cedar held that lead at halftime.
Martinez found his goal quickly in the second half. He was a given a present in a misplayed clearance from the goalkeeper about 30 yards from goal with no defenders in front of him. Martinez dribbled in and put it away from 12 yards out.
George Altirs made it 3-0 when he hammered home a cross from Mieles. The cross fooled the Placer defense and Altirs had plenty of time to collect it and then put it into the net.
With five minutes left, a blunder from the Placer side cost the Northern California team another goal. The goalkeeper picked up a pass from his defender, which resulted in the referee awarding an indirect free kick from six yards out. Jack Worth finished the chance with a shot into the roof of the net.
Twin James Worth capped the scoring with the final goal of the game in the 79th minute. It was the second goal of the season for James.
Cedar Stars Academy went 3-0 at the Showcase with 10 goals for and only two against.
Real Salt Lake AZ U16 1-1 Vardar U16
Oakland commit Spencer Nolff scored the best goal of the day on a 25-yard volley into the upper corner of the net for the equalizer midway through the second half.
Real Salt Lake struck first with a goal in the 28th minute on an easy tap-in after breaking the backline of Vardar. Joshua Drack nearly made it 2-0 for RSL right before half when he snuck into the box and got on the end of a cross, but his shot went over the bar.
Verdar clawed its way back into the game in the second half and Nolff put an exclamation point on the draw with his stunning strike in a game that lacked in quantity of goal scoring chances.
RSL AZ takes on Montreal Impact on Tuesday in its second game of the Showcase. Vardar faces Texas Rush on Tuesday.
