When the starting goalkeeper for the FC Delco U18 Boys Academy team suffered a knee injury, U16 goalkeeper Zackary Steffen stepped up, and has performed superbly. Due to his play, he finds himself in the top five of the 2013 Boys class in the Players To Watch Pennsylvania Regional Top 20 Rankings.
“Zack can be the all-time greatest goalkeeper of this club,” FC Delco U16 Academy Coach Alan Mezger said. “I know our academy soccer coaches think the sky is the limit for Zack, and we think every year we’ll lose him to U.S. Soccer Residency.”

Playing mostly with the U18s has given Steffen the confidence and experience that the FC Delco staff thinks he needs to finally be looked at by U.S. Soccer. Mezger points out how secure Steffen is inside the 18-yard box during crosses, and the presence he exudes even with players older than him.“He’s gone through a growth spurt, and currently stands at 6’1” or 6’2”, but he has stayed incredibly agile,” Mezger said. “What he has developed the last couple of years has been his leadership and organization skills with the defense.”
Mezger, as with the rest of the staff, believes that the standout goalkeeper is ready to prove himself on the bigger stage, but until the national team calls Steffen up, their entire focus will be on keeping him ready.
Going down the different rankings in the Pennsylvania region, Melvin Snoh and Christian Kashcak are fourth and fifth in the 2012 Boys class. National team members Zachary Pfeffer and Colton Storm lead the 2013 Boys.
Emily Armstrong and Taryn Tomczyk are third and fourth for the 2012 Girls, while Taylor Caparo rounds out the top five in the 2013 Girls rankings. Veronica Latsko leads the 2014 Girls.
