International, US clubs shine at Dallas Cup
One of youth soccer’s most prominent tournament on these shores came to a close on Sunday, as sides from both around the world and United States secured silverware at the 2016 edition of Dallas Cup.
Below is a recap of which team captured each age group as the tournament handed out titles on both Saturday and Sunday.
U19 Super Group
Two English-based clubs, Everton and Fulham, survived the rigors of the Gordon Jago Super Group, squaring off on Sunday to close out Dallas Cup. Everton’s leading scorer at the tournament, Delial Brewster, opened the scoring in the 27th minute.
Brewster made it 2-0 in the 71st minute, providing the winning margin after Fulham’s Elijah Adebayo nabbed a consolation goal. It wasn’t enough, as American midfielder Luca de la Torre’s side fell 2-1 to Everton.
U19
Maicon Abreu’s goal in the 76th minute provided the winning margin between two California clubs, as FC Golden State White edged out California Rush by a 1-0 score line.
Super 17s
Mexican club Tigres bested FC Golden State’s U16 Development Academy side on penalty kicks after the two sides battled to a 2-2 draw. Tigres jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals from Jair Diaz and Hector Ortegon. FC Golden State’s Kevin Cervantes pulled a goal back before the halftime break, providing a clinical finish in front of goal. U.S. youth national team pool player Harold Hanson won a penalty in the dying minutes of the game, converting the penalty to tie the game. After two scoreless extra time periods, Tigres goalkeeper Raul Elizando eventually bagged the decisive PK in a 4-3 shootout win.
U17
Two penalty kicks from Jack Beer were all the goals New York SC needed, hoisting the U17 Championship trophy thanks to a 2-0 defeat of Solar Chelsea Red.
U16
After a scoreless first half between CF Monterrey and Andromeda FC, the Mexican club roared to life, scoring three times to top the Texas club 3-0. Neder Medin opened the scoring in the 47th minute, before Alexis Avendaño and Eduardo Banda rounded out the scoring.
U15
In a clash between two international powers, Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt blasted Mexico’s Tigres by a 4-0 score to pick up the U15 title. Fritz Oestreiche opened the scoring in the 10th minute, and Eintracht Frankfurt never looked back. Jonas-Gabriel Pfalz added a second before the half, while Kahan Kuscu and Luca Uth found the back of the net in the 68th and 71st minute respectively.
U14
Victor Cano struck with eight minute remaining to secure hardware for FC Los Angeles B01 Black. The California side edged local side FC Dallas Youth 02B Central 1-0.
U13
One of the week’s standouts at Dallas Cup was Mexican club Tigres, which saw three teams progress to the finals. However, Solar Chelsea 03B bested their counterparts on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in the U13 championship. Nicolas Nee’s ninth minute opening goal for Solar was canceled out by a second half strike by Abraham Rodrigues, and neither side managed another goal, sending the game to PKs.
