Player Ratings: U.S. U17 WNT wins CONCACAF
The U.S. U17 Women’s National Team claimed its second CONCACAF Championship on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Canada in the title game.
Forward Amber Munerlyn scored the game-winner in the 21st minute off an assist from Summer Green.
U.S. goalkeeper Jane Campbell recorded her fifth shutout in five games to seal the win despite some nervous defending from the U.S. in the final 20 minutes.
Both U.S. and Canada had already clinched spots at the 2012 U17 World Cup thanks to victories on Thursday in the semifinal round. Mexico will join them in Azerbaijan after defeating Panama 6-0 in the third place match.
U.S. U17 WNT Player Ratings:
GK: Jane Campbell, 8. Campbell was only credited with three saves, but she was heavily involved in the play with timely interceptions on through balls and crosses throughout the contest.
D: Brittany Basinger, 7. The outside back did very well defensively against some very good forwards from Canada.
D: Madeline Bauer, 7. It was Bauer’s long pass that started the goal for the U.S. in the first half, but she had trouble finding the outlets after the hockey assist.
D: Miranda Freeman, 8. There was no getting by Freeman for the Canada offense. The center back thwarted any attacker that came her way.
D: Gabrielle Miranda, 6. The speed of the Canada’s attackers caught Miranda off guard at first, but she settled into the game well with some crucial tackles.
M: Morgan Andrews, 6. Canada’s athleticism shut down some of the passing lanes for the quarterback, but Andrews did pick her spots well in stopping the attack down the middle.
M: Sarah Robinson, 6. It was a quiet game for the Energizer Bunny of the U.S. team. She had some timely interceptions in the first half, but did not have her normal influence on the offense.
M: Morgan Stanton, 7. It was a washing machine-like performance for Stanton – she cleaned up every little mess in the midfield with some nifty passing.
F: Amber Munerlyn, 8. The speedy winger fought off defenders and calmly lifted the ball over the keeper to supply a fitting winning tally in a hard fought title game.
F: Summer Green, 7. Green’s brilliant assist provided that bit of magic to separate two very good teams on Sunday.
F: Margaret Purce, 6. The defenders were keen to swarm Purce as soon as she touched the ball, which limited the effectiveness of the striker.
Substitutes:
M: Lauren Kaskie, 6. The game was on the edge of a cliff when Kaskie came on; but when she did get her foot on the ball, she slowed down the action for a few brief seconds.
F: Emily Bruder, 6. Albertin Montoya brought on Bruder midway through the second half to help the U.S. attack keep hold of the game, which the Utah-native was able to do in spurts.
D: Elizabeth Raben, no rating. The defender came on late, and did well in the few times she was involved in the play.
