US Club id2 Argentina tour nearly underway
With dates and opponents set, the US Club Soccer 2015 id2 National Selection International Tour is nearly underway.
In its fifth year, the boys select tour for U14 players will travel to Argentina for its first trip to South America since it embarked on its first one in 2010. After trekking to the Netherlands, Germany, Scotland, England, Spain and Italy in past years, a selection of 18 2001s and 2002s will play four matches against the youth clubs (all of which are made up of players born in 2001) of some of Argentina’s premier clubs.
After a brief camp in Houston, the id2 squad opens play against Velez Sarsfield on March 3 at the club’s famed Villa Olimpica training ground, which will also serve as the team’s home base for the trip’s duration. Next, the team moves on to face renowned Buenos Aires giant Boca Juniors at its La Candela field on March 5. Two days later, the id2 team moves on to face the youth side of second division club Argentinos Juniors before rounding off the trip with a March 9 visit to San Lorenzo. The team will also take in an Argentinian Primera Division match while in Buenos Aires.
The id2 program has helped launch the careers of a handful of up-and-coming youth players over the past half decade, including recent Borussia Dortmund signing Christian Pulisic. The 2014 trip to Italy was its most successful ever, as the select team rolled up wins against U14 teams from Juventus, Siena and Fiorentina en route to a 3-0-1 record.
This year, New Jersey-based club PDA was the only one to land two players on the roster in Domonic De Almeida and Julian Anderson, one of just two players born in 2002 to make the roster. LA Galaxy defender Togo Nakamura is the only player based in an MLS academy to travel with the team.
