Just seconds from defeating Mexico and winning a fourth straight Under-20 Concacaf Championship, the United States fell 2-1 in extra time versus the host side on Sunday.
Nimfash Berchimas scored a sensational goal in the 52nd minute, and thanks to several strong saves from Adam Beaudry, the U.S. was able to hold a 1-0 lead until deep into added time.
However, Mexico forward Mateo Levy tallied a last-gasp equalizer, his glancing header nestling at the far post to tie the game.
Neither side was able to score for nearly the duration of the 30 minutes of extra time. Once again, Mexico scored just before the final whistle, winning the title thanks to a late goal from Diego Ochoa.
U.S. Lineup: Adam Beaudry; Aiden Harangi, Noah Cobb (Sergio Oregel), Nolan Norris, Luca Bombino; Brooklyn Raines (Stuart Hawkins), Pedro Soma (Taha Habroune), Nikolas Tsakiris (Cruz Medina); Nimfasha Berchimas, David Vazquez (Zavier Gozo), Ruben Ramos (Marcos Zamdrano)
