Young Americans Abroad: More German goals
Each week, TopDrawerSoccer highlights the top young Americans looking to breakthrough at pro teams around Europe. Players competing on first team squads won’t be covered.
Adam Armour’s career in Germany is off to a solid start.
The U.S. youth international continued to feature for 1. Fc Nürnberg’s Under-19 team in youth Bundesliga action. Along with earning a start in a 2-1 defeat, he scored the game’s lone goal for his team.
After spending the bulk of his pro career at this point with Wolfsburg II, Bryang Kayo spent the weekend playing for the A-Junioren side. Alongside fellow American Kobe Hernandez-Foster, Kayo and Wolfsburg drew 1-1 with Viktoria Berlin. Hernandez-Foster helped to setup Wolfsburg’s lone goal of the game, as he played in teammate Manuel Polster with a long diagonal ball over the back line for their only tally of the game.
Center back Michael Edwards was on the bench and didn’t feature for Wolfsburg II.
Nick Taitague managed to play 63 minutes for Schalke 04 U23s, which drew 0-0 against VfL Sportfreunde Lotte. Matthew Hoppe entered from the bench in the 68th minute, but couldn’t help his side break the deadlock. It was a brighter story for the Under-17 team, as Evan Rotundo played 75 minutes in a 4-1 victory over SC Paderborn.
Goalkeeper Carver Miller was in the starting lineup again for Arminia Bielefeld, which fell to SG Unterrath by a 1-0 score.
Similar to Armour, Nicolas Carrera’s been involved with his new team after moving to Germany instead of playing college soccer. Carrera played 90 minutes for Holstein Kiel’s A-Junioren team in a 2-1 defeat against Werder Bremen.
Defender Mason Judge started and played the full 90 for Eintracht Frankfurt U19s in a 2-1 defeat to Hoffenheim.
In B-Junioren action, Malick Sanogo was amongst the goals once again, converting a penalty kick in a 2-1 loss.
Busy weekend in England
While clubs in England can be more difficult to sign with for Americans, several did feature for youth sides over the weekend.
Defender Jonathan Tomkinson was on the wrong side of a 2-0 result for Norwich City Under-23s, falling at the hands of Leeds United.
Midfielder Matteo Ritaccio returned for the Liverpool Under-23s, entering in the 63rd minute of a 3-1 victory over Chelsea.
Under-20 eligible midfielder Owen Otasowie started in midfield for Wovlerhampton Under-23s, losing by a 2-1 score against Crystal Palace.
Also facing a youth side from Crystal Palace, Zach Booth and his Leicester City U18 side lost by a 1-0 score on Saturday.
Players feature in Holland, Croatia
Midfielder Rokas Pukstas continued to feature for HNK Hajduk Split at the Under-17 age group. He played the full 90 in a 2-2 draw against Dinamo Zagreb.
In the Netherlands, Richie Ledezma was in the starting lineup for Jong PSV, which lost by a 1-0 score to De Graafschap. Left back Chris Gloster entered in the 58th minute.
