#1 Rangers Undefeated Through 2012 Regular Season; Drop Skyhawks 2-1
DURANGO, Colo.: Nationally ranked #1 Regis University men's soccer fought to come back after a 1-0 deficit in the first half to defeat defending national champions Fort Lewis College 2-1 on the day.
The Skyhawks scored first in the 27th minute of play off a rebounded free kick, but it would be the last time Fort Lewis would see the back of the net.
With the Fort Lewis fans providing fuel for the Ranger fire, Regis put their first goal in six minutes into the second half.
After gaining a free kick opportunity, junior Justin Ortinau sent the ball towards the goal. Senior defender Michael Sheehan sent a header past the Skyhawks goalkeeper to even the score. The goal marks his first of the season.
In the 70th minute, sophomore Martin Maybin saw another chance open for Regis and sent a cross in from the right side of the field. Senior Mark Kelly busted through defenders to win the header that he sent to the back of the net for the game-winning goal. (Goal shown).
Freshman Christian Nicolosi earned three saves throughout the match. He and the Rangers finish regular season play with a perfect 14-0-0 RMAC record and a 16-0-1 overall record.
With the win, the Rangers become the second team in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference history to remain undefeated during regular season play. The team is the only NCAA division II men's soccer program in the nation.
As a result of both women's and men's soccer teams finishing first in the RMAC regular season, Regis University will host the RMAC Tournament on Friday, November 2nd.
On Friday, Nov. 2, top seed Regis will host the winner between UC-Colorado Springs and Colorado Mesa at 2:30 p.m. Second seed Colorado Mines will host the winner between Fort Lewis and Metro State at 2:30 p.m.
The RMAC men's soccer championship game will be held Sunday, Nov. 4 at the highest remaining seed following Friday's games
