#11 Warhawks Improve to 13-2 with Win
Junior Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North)stole the show on senior day, but the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team surely didn't mind. With winds gusting up to 25 miles an hour Monday night, Stanko scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over Simpson College. This was the final regular season home game for the 11th ranked Warhawks as they improve to 13-2 with the win. The Storm fall to 5-8-2 with the loss.
Head Coach Tony Guinn started all five of his seniors Monday night. Alex Buchman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford), Sam Novak (Milton, Wis./Milton), Jordan Wilkins (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie), Kyle Ricely (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) and Jared Denu (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) all donned the Warhawk for perhaps the final time at home. If the Warhawks earn a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament in November, they could potentially host, but UW-W's final three regular season games are all on the road.
Stanko got things going in the ninth minute when he elevated over his defender to head in a perfectly placed cross from Jordan Wilkins (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie).
Jordan Kayser (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) almost added a goal in the 16th minute, but his shot was stopped by the Storm's goalkeeper Austin Schafer.
Wilkins had an opportunity of his own in the 26th minute, but Schafer was again there to make the stop and limit the Warhawks to just one goal in the first half.
The Warhawks put some pressure on to start the second half. Four shots in the first eight minutes of the half set the tone.
Kyle Clancy (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) elected to take a corner for the Warhawks in the 54th minute, and it paid dividends. Clancy's cross found Stanko, who again used his head to knock it in and give the Warhawks a 2-0 advantage.
Coach Guinn used the two-goal cushion as an opportunity to get everyone some playing time. Twenty-seven different players saw the field for the Warhawks on Monday night.
UW-W did concede a goal in the final minute of play, but the win on senior day was not to be foiled. Coach Guinn said after the game, "It's always nice to get a win on senior day. On top of that we got our 13th win out of 15 chances. That's a pretty big accomplishment."
The Warhawks hit the road beginning next week Wednesday when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa to take on the University of Dubuque. Their final two matches will come against in-state rivals UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville.
