#22 Coastal Carolina Rolls Past Presbyterian
CLINTON, S.C. – The 22nd-ranked Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team used a commanding performance along with goals from Sergio Camargo, Pedro Ribeiro, Simon Laugsand and Kai Morton en route to a 4-0 victory at Presbyterian College on Tuesday evening.
The win moves Coastal to 4-2-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in Big South play, while Presbyterian College falls to 2-3-0 (0-1-0 Big South). The Chanticleers have now won 20 straight Big South Conference regular season games dating back to the start of the 2011 campaign. Overall, the Chants are unbeaten in their last 21 regular season conference competitions dating back to the final game of the 2010 regular season.
The Chanticleers, playing their second road game in a four-day stretch, finished the contest with an appalling 29-6 advantage in shots, including a 17-3 edge in shots on goal. Additionally, Coastal held a 7-0 lead in corner opportunities.
Seven Chants tallied points on the evening led by Camargo’s three on a goal and an assist. Ribeiro (goal), Morton (goal), Laugsand (goal), Jakub Stourac (two assists) and Portillo (two assists) each notched two points, while Kevin Le Bras added a point with a first-half assist.
It took nearly 45 minutes before Coastal Carolina’s Camargo broke the scoreless tie with 1:41 showing on the first half clock. Le Bras played a ball across the front of the box to Stourac who sent a one-timer into the chest of the Blue Hose keeper Tyler Beadle. However, the ball deflected off Beadle’s chest and to the foot of Camargo who sent a quick blast into the back of the net. The goal was the freshman’s third of the season and second in a three-game stretch.
The first 40-plus minutes of the match featured the Chants playing a possession-oriented attacking scheme as the Blue Hose entrenched all 11 players behind the ball. Coastal was able to attempt 14 shots through the Presbyterian College defense; however, none proved to be particularly threatening.
Pedro Ribeiro, who was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Monday for his three-goal effort last week, scored the Chanticleers’ second goal of the game at the 54th minute of action. The Brazilian midfielder netted his team-leading fifth score of the season on a header to the far post following Portillo’s free kick from 10-yards outside the ’18.
The Chants found their third goal of the contest by way of Laugsand, a defender. Portillo sent his sixth corner of the night into the box toward the heads of a group of teal-clad Chants. Stourac was able to get his head on the ball to knock it down toward Laugsand. Laugsand corralled the loose ball and slotted it home just past the outstretched arms of Presbyterian College’s Beadle. The goal marked the first of Laugsand’s Coastal Carolina career.
Moments later the Chants looked as though they would score additional goal, but Shawn McLaws’ shot rang off the crossbar then down into the six-yard box before being cleared by a Blue Hose defender.
Defender Kia Morton scored the final goal of the match in the 88th minute to give Coastal a 4-nil advantage. Camargo sent Coastal’s seventh corner of the game into the box where it was headed into the net by the hard-charging Morton.
Devin Cook picked up the clean sheet and the win for the Chants to move to 3-2-0 on the season. Presbyterian College’s Beadle (2-3-0) was charged with the loss despite recording 13 saves.
Coastal steps out of conference play for a Saturday (Sept. 21) evening showdown at No. 5 VCU. The Chanticleers and Rams are slated for a 6 p.m. kickoff at SportsBackers Stadium in Richmond, Va. VCU leads the all-time series by a 4-2-0 count; however, Coastal won the most recent series meeting -- a 2-1 overtime decision in Conway on Sept. 11, 2011.
Presbyterian College returns to action at Georgia Southern on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
