400! Bowling Green reaches program milestone
September 8, 2014
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team reached a milestone on Friday night (Aug. 29). The Falcons' 2-0 win over IUPUI at Cochrane Field marked the 400th victory in program history.
BGSU now has an all-time record of 400-343-78 since the inception of the varsity program under Mickey Cochrane in 1965. Cochrane was at the field bearing his name on Friday evening, and a host of former BGSU men's soccer greats were in town as well for the program's Alumni Weekend festivities, which included a golf outing on Saturday.
"We have such a proud history in this program," said Eric Nichols, only the fifth coach in the 50-year history of the storied program. "Our players and coaches are honored to be the current torch-carriers, and we are privileged to get the 400th win.
"We will continue to honor the great players, coaches and teams that came before us as we look to add onto the extraordinary foundation they built."
Nearly 400 letterwinners (374, to be exact, entering the 2014 season) have played a part in helping the Falcons reach that 400-victory plateau. Coach Cochrane's 1965 team got the ball rolling with a 6-0 win over Kenyon on October 12 of that year, the first varsity win in BGSU men's soccer history. Other milestone victories have come against Ohio State (wins #50 and 100), Notre Dame (150), Cincinnati (200), Akron (250 and 300, with both wins over the Zips coming in the MAC Tournament), Northern Illinois (350) and IUPUI.
The Falcons' first chance to notch victory number 401 comes on Tuesday night (Sept. 2), as BGSU hosts the University of Findlay. First touch is set for 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane, and admission is free.
