[5] Denver Runs RS Unbeaten Run to 32
[5] Denver 2-1 [RV] New Mexico (Hanlin 52’, Rochowski 89’, Shinyashiki 110’)
DENVER – The [5/3] University of Denver men’s soccer team stretched its regular season unbeaten run to 32 matches with a 2-1 extra time win over [RV/-] New Mexico on Wednesday night at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
“Before that onslaught at the end of regulation, I thought our defense did a great job of holding them to only three or four shots,” head coach Jamie Franks said. “We have to figure out a way not to let that goal in. I don’t think it was our best performance tonight, but at the end of the day it’s about getting results, and we found a way to do that tonight.”
Sophomore Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) netted the game-winner with eight seconds to go in the second period of extra time. Redshirt-senior Karsten Hanlin (Centennial, Colo.) had the final kick of the ball from the corner flag, but his set-piece was initially headed by UNM’s Nicholas Rochowski and deflected off the top of Shinyashki’s head off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Following a scoreless first half, the Pioneers (13-0-2) found the breakthrough via a 15-yard Hanlin blast into the side netting in the 52nd minute. Sophomore Kenny Akamatsu (Niigata, Japan) deflected a loose ball down the right channel, got around his defender and whipped a cross to the penalty spot that was just behind the run of Shinyashiki, but fell right to the feet of the secondary run of Hanlin who netted his fourth of the campaign. Akamatsu’s assist is his second of the season and the third of his career.
New Mexico (7-6-0) threw numbers forward in the remainder of the second half and grabbed the equalizer in the 89th minute. UNM’s Aaron Herrera took a shot from just outside the penalty area through several bodies. Denver’s Scott DeVoss (Centennial, Colo.) blocked the ball in-front, but the ball fell right to Rochowski who slotted home his first of the season.
Redshirt sophomore Nick Gardner (Marvin, N.C.) made one save on the evening, but it was a big one as the Denver keeper denied a Luke Lawrence strike that looked picked out for the top corner in the 107th minute.
