#8 Coastal Routs PC to Advance to Semis
CONWAY – Top-seeded and eighth nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina defeated eighth-seeded Presbyterian 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Big South Men’s Soccer Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting Tuesday evening. The Chanticleers advance to play No. 5 High Point on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the semifinals at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C. It is Coastal’s 11th consecutive semifinal appearance.
Coastal got on the board in the 21st minute on a goal by sophomore Ricky Garbanzo. Senior Ashton Bennett took a pass from junior Pedro Ribeiro inside the box and put a shot on goal that was saved by Presbyterian goalkeeper Tyler Beadle off the crossbar. Garbanzo, a first team All-Big South selection, followed up and headed the rebound into the left side of the net from point-blank range for his 12th goal of the season.
The Chanticleers made it 2-0 in the 40th minute as senior Sean McCormick scored off an assist by sophomore Shawn McLaws. McLaws sent a cross from the right side toward the far post and McCormick touched it in the near side for his second tally of the year.
The goal came with Presbyterian a man down after redshirt junior Nico Fazio picked up his second yellow card of the game in the 28th minute.
Coastal held a 10-0 edge in shots on goal at halftime and made it 3-0 on the scoreboard in the 50th minute. Bennett, the league’s Attacking Player of the Year, recorded his 14th goal of the season, scoring from the middle of the 18-yard box off a centering pass by McCormick.
Sophomore Henrik Robstad increased the lead to four goals in the 58th minute, heading in a service from freshman Jhamie Hyde for his second goal of the year.
The Blue Hose fell two men down in the 60th minute when sophomore Jamel Manning received a red card and Coastal junior Matt Risher capped the game’s scoring with an unassisted goal in the 74th minute, his second tally of the season.
Presbyterian lost two more players to red cards in the 79th minute, but was able to keep the Chanticleers off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Bennett and McCormick each finished with a goal and an assist to lead Coastal. Senior Byron Quinatoa recorded the lone shot for Presbyterian.
Coastal finished the game with 16-0 shots on goal advantage. Sophomore Federico Bertele played the first 55:45 in goal for the Chanticleers to notch the victory and improve his record to 15-1-2. Junior Mark Petrus replaced Bertele and played 23:50, with junior Scott Shewfelt following him and finishing off the remaining 10:25. The trio combined for the Chants’ 11th clean sheet of the season, tying the squad for third-most in a single season on the CCU all-time list.
Beadle fell to 4-16-0, despite recording 11 saves in 73:52 of action. Junior Tanner Osborne replaced him and played the last 16:08 for the Blue Hose.
Coastal improves to 17-1-2 on the year, while Presbyterian ends its season at 4-16-0. The Chanticleers will be making their 20th appearance in the Big South Tournament semifinals.
