[9] Denver Tops Oral Roberts, 1-0
Oral Roberts 0-1 Denver (Dunk 49’)
TULSA – The [9/9] University of Denver men’s soccer team kept its sixth clean sheet of the campaign, and got a set-piece goal from redshirt-junior Reagan Dunk (Dallas, Texas) to send the Pioneers to the top of the Summit League table after a 1-0 win over Oral Roberts on Saturday night at Case Soccer Stadium.
“I don’t think it was our best performance out there tonight, especially in the first half, but we will certainly take the result,” head coach Jamie Franks said. “We were being very reactive in the opening 45, and didn’t have the same fight and energy that I’ve seen from this group in other matches this season. Halftime was a real character test for our group, and I thought that we came out and played very well in the first 20 minutes of the half. We probably should have scored two or three in that span, but we got the one we needed and defended well in the last 10 minutes to close out the result.”
Redshirt-senior goalkeeper Dan Jackson (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was called on to make four saves in the Pioneers (10-0-2, 2-0-1 Summit) 10th win of the season. The 2015 campaign now marks the fourth-consecutive season that Denver has recorded a double-digit win year.
The Pioneers had a 5-3 shot advantage over Oral Roberts (4-5-2, 2-1-0) in the opening 45 minutes, putting three of their five shots on target.
Denver got on the board in the 49th minute off a set piece, as junior Karsten Hanlin (Centennial, Colo.) curled in his free kick service from the right just outside the six, and Dunk got on the end of the restart, knocking it past ORU keeper Hunter Harrison.
The Crimson and Gold nearly doubled their advantage in the 55th minute when senior captain Jordan Schweitzer (Everett, Wash.) got off his mark and flashed a header across the face of goal off a Kenny Akamatsu (Niigata, Japan) corner, but Schweitzer’s attempt was cleared off the line by a Golden Eagles defender.
UP NEXT: The Pioneers return home for Homecoming Weekend on Saturday as Denver welcomes Omaha to the Mile High City. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. MT at CIBER Field.
