@FGCU_MSoccer Falls in West Coast Finale
SEATTLE – For the third time in its first five games this year, the FGCU men’s soccer team went to overtime, and for the second time it fell in OT, this time on Sunday to Seattle University, 3-2, as the Redhawks scored a goal in the 99th minute against the Eagles.
FGCU took a 2-1 lead into the second half on the heels of first-half tallies from Xavier Silva (Boca Raton, Fla./North Broward Prep) and Henry Penagos (Margate, Fla./American Heritage School of Boca HS). However, Seattle (1-6-1) scored in the 50th minute to tie the contest and then tallied its game winner a minute prior to the first overtime whistle to win its first game of the year.
Silva scored his first goal of the year off a free kick from sophomore David Robledo (Dallas, Texas/Hillcrest HS) in the 34th minute. Silva then assisted Penagos’s second goal of the campaign in the 40th minute, just minutes after SU tied the contest at 1-1 in the 36th minute.
Seattle knotted the game back up in the early stages of the second half with a strike not even five minutes in to the stanza, and the two teams were on equal terms the remainder of the contest during the regular 90 minutes. FGCU headed into its third overtime contest of the year and nearly entered its second double-overtime match, but Seattle scored the game winner at the 99:18 mark.
For the game FGCU out-shot SU, 18-16, with half of those shots coming off the feet of three different players: Silva, Madrid and Will Suedois (Miami Shores, Fla./Florida Virtual School).
The game with the Redhawks concluded a West Coast trip for the Green and Blue (0-5-1), which started with a 5-0 setback to No. 6 Washington on Friday.
FGCU returns to action on Friday as it heads to another corner of the United States – this time the Northeast – to face Penn and then Princeton on Sunday at 4 p.m. on ESPNU. The contest with the Tigers will be the Eagles third nationally-televised contest of the non-conference slate before it begins its Atlantic Sun Conference Championship defense for the third straight season the following weekend.
