Adelphi Blanks St. Michael's, 2-0
Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. – The men's soccer team hosted the Purple Knights of St. Michael's College in a Northeast-10 Conference contest earlier this evening. An early goal in the first half set the stage for a 2-0 Panther victory which marks their fourth straight win; all of which have been shutouts. With the win, the Panthers advance to 7-4, 6-3 NE-10 while St. Michael's slips to 5-4, 5-2 NE-10.
The Brown and Gold wasted no time attacking the net from the get-go. It took just 10:56 into the game before Juan Aguiar scored his fifth goal of the season after one-timing a low pass from Diego Zuniga, giving his team the early 1-0 advantage.
Of St. Michael's three first half shots, Anthony Stanley's attempt came the closest when his free kick attempt curved passed a trio of Brown and Gold defenders and ricocheted off the post and bounced back into play. Adelphi's defense picked up the loose ball and defused the threat by clearing it.
Senior captain, Nicholas Costa came dangerously close to adding an insurance goal in the 58th minute when he fired a low shot from the right corner of the box through a sea of purple jerseys, but it hit the inside of the goal post.
However, in the 63rd minute, the Brown and Gold did find that insurance goal. Zuniga, earning his second assist of the game, sent a long cross from the left side into teammate Alejandro Penzini who completed the textbook header for his first goal of the game and team leading sixth of the season, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead which is how the score would remain through the end of the game.
Adelphi led in shots 11-9 but were at a 2-1 corner disadvantage. Ahmad Salamah was credited with four saves, three coming in the second, to secure his fourth straight shutout.
Coach's Thoughts on the Game
"All the credit again to the boys with an important win and clean sheet," stated Head Coach Carlo Acquista. "Again, conference matches are so difficult and decided by inches. We have to keep up the momentum moving forward."
