Adelphi Men's Soccer Blanks Stonehill, 2-0
Easton, MA. - The Adelphi University men's soccer team traveled to the campus of Stonehill College earlier this afternoon to take on the Skyhawks in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The Panthers netted one goal in each half to come away with a 2-0 victory and improve to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. With the loss, the Skyhawks drop to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
The Panthers dominated in all offensive categories, as they outshot the Skyhawks 28-5 over the course of the game. Thirteen of these shots came in the opening half and after the Brown and Gold came up empty on their first seven attempts, Juan Aguiar netted his third goal of the season on a one-timer from Diego Zuniga to give Adelphi a 1-0 lead nearly 30 minutes into the game.
The Panthers took five shots throughout the remainder of the half but could not score another goal. However, on the defensive end, they held the Skyhawks scoreless and shotless through the initial 45 minutes of play.
The second half began in a similar fashion as the Brown and Gold dominated time of possession. An insurance goal came with less than 10 minutes left to play as Caelen Huber found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal. For the second time in the game, Zuniga helped create the scoring opportunity and was credited with his second assist of the game.
Momodou Sawaneh and Zuniga combined for an even split of 10 shots while Aguiar and Nicholas Costa chipped in with a combined seven.
As in the first frame, the Panther defense proved too strong for the host Skyhawks who would only muster three shots in the second. Adelphi also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman keeper Sergio Reyes picked up the win in goal and made four saves while his counterpart Adam Colella was credited with 10 saves in Stonehill's loss.
Coach's Thoughts on the Game
"It's tough to go on the road and get a positive result from a tough, resilient, athletic and determined home team," described Head Coach Carlo Acquista. "I'm very proud of my guys and how hard they played and how they finished their chances and closed out the match. We used a lot of players today and it was a total team effort to get the result."
